GO BACK
"We feel more secure when things are visible.
They suspect the ear.. they don't trust it.."
Notes on Marshall McLuhan -
The medium is the message
• "The invisible environment"
• It is impossible to understand social and cultural change without
knowledge of the media.
• Global Village: The world has become a global village due to the internet.
• Hot medium: Can have a lot of influence on humans. Concentrated on 1 sense. > A lot of data/information, released in detail (such as with the newspaper)
• Cool medium: Has a small influence on humans> no detailed information is given. > The user must actively work with the medium> You are immediately confronted with it, as with television.

McLuhan on the message: "The effect of the medium on humans." We call that message. McLuhan calls this: "the content"> Effect of medium on man.

• A message can be much more than just text, images or sound.
• Message can come across very differently on television than on radio> So ... the medium is the message
• Senses are stimulated with every message. With each medium, different senses. > It is not about the content of the message but the way in which it is presented.

It involves thinking through alternative ways of storytelling and building a narrative, investigating how choices in media make this both possible and ask for different ways of storytelling. From this notion we need to think through who the publication is for and in which context, how will the publication reach or even create our audience? As such it raises questions related to ‘speed, quality and positioning. The aim of urgent publishing is that the topic both has value now and in the future.

A way to explore all these different types of media and how they relate to the (content of) the publication. Pushes us to ask what a publication is in this era, why we publish and for whom, and how all of this relates to the media we use; a method to create Urgent publishing.

"Lest there be no more telling of stories at all, some of us out here in the wild oats, amid the alien corn, think we'd better start telling another one, which maybe people can go on with when the old one's finished. Maybe.
The trouble is, we've all let ourselves become part of the killer story, and so we may get finished along with it"

What you are is a woman.

In it, as in all fiction, there is room enough to keep even Man where he belongs, in his place in the scheme of things; there is time enough to gather plenty of wild oats and sow them too, and sing to little Oom, and listen to Ool's joke, and watch newts, and still the story isn't over. Still there are seeds to be gathered, and room in the bag of stars.

For me this refers to the society in which we now live: The society of the spectacle. We are all in the thick of it and most likely will continue to do so.

This sentence struck me because it refers directly to my subject. "Catcallers" often forget that a woman is also a human being and not an object.

This is actually what the story is all about for me. There are so many beautiful things you can focus on that are all forgotten or not seen. Multiple stories that can be told in addition to the big story.

Week 4 | 21&22 Sept
Collect and highlight at least two quotes that stand out to you.
Civilization

as in: good manners. In which catcallers always "think" that catcalls are their way of "complimenting" a woman's appearance. This is the most common defense men have against this issue.

Sketches l Speech bubble
How can I let people go to the website by sticking a sticker through the city..
